Mebendazole

The active ingredient in Mebendazole is mebendazole.
Introduction
Mebendazole kills worms, worm eggs and larvae by preventing the absorption of nutrients.

It can be used in various worm infections, such as arthropods, roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and tapeworm. It can also be used for some other worm infections that are especially common in the tropics.
Use

Dosage:

The dosage below applies to both children over 2 years of age and adults. No special diet or laxative needs to be prescribed. If the worm infection is accompanied by diarrhea, its symptoms should be treated at the same time.
Infections with arthropods: 1 tablet and after 14 days 1 tablet again, repeat every 14 days if necessary.
Infections with roundworms, whipworms and hookworms: 1 tablet
in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening, for 3 consecutive days.
If complete cure is not obtained after three weeks, treatment should be repeated
How to.
  • Tablets: take with a glass of water.
  • Drinks: measure the recommended amount with the measuring spoon or measuring cup.
When.
You may take the medicine at any time of the day.

If you need to take it for several days, it is best to choose fixed times, then you are less likely to forget a dose. If you take it once a day: preferably in the morning. If you use it twice a day: morning and evening.

How long.
  • Emerald maggots. Two doses two weeks apart are usually enough. So on day 1 and on day 15. If they have not disappeared by then, you can take another dose after two weeks. Please consult your doctor or pharmacy.
  • Roundworms, whipworms and hookworms. The cure usually lasts three days with two doses a day, morning and evening. You can repeat this cure after three weeks, if you still find worms in the stool after that time.
  • Tapeworm. The cure usually lasts from several months to several years.
  • Other worm infections. Depending on the species, the cure lasts from three to 30 days, sometimes up to several months. You should do so only after consulting your doctor.
Side effects
Besides the desired effect, this drug can cause side effects. These practically never occur with the normal dosage used for barworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

The side effects that may possibly occur are gastrointestinal upset, skin rash and hypersensitivity. In infants, serious side effects may occur, though, very rarely.

Rare
  • Abdominal pain and very rarely diarrhea and flatulence. However, this may also be due to the worm infection itself.
Very rarely
  • Skin rash or hypersensitivity reactions, such as hives. A severe hypersensitivity reaction can be noticed by tightness in the chest, a swollen face or a severe skin abnormality. If this happens, stop taking it and consult your doctor. You should not use this medicine in the future. Tell the pharmacy that you are hypersensitive to mebendazole. The pharmacy team can then make sure you do not receive the drug again.

In infants, very rarely
  • Fever or convulsions. If so, warn your doctor. In children under 2 years of age, use this medicine only on doctor's advice.

After long-term use of high doses, very rarely
  • Abnormalities in the blood, kidneys or liver. You may sometimes notice this by a sore throat, fever, blisters in the mouth, rapid bruising or jaundice. If this happens, warn your doctor.

Consult your doctor if you experience other side effects that worry you.
Forgotten
  • Three-day course. Did you forget a dose and will it be less than four hours before you need to take the next doses? Take the forgotten doses and take the next dose at least four hours later. It does not matter if the course of three days extends slightly to four days, as long as you take the total amount of the course.
  • Repeat after two, three or four weeks. If you are late for the second treatment, take the drug as soon as you notice. Check carefully that you or your child(ren) are worm-free. If necessary, you can repeat the treatment one more time.
Forbidden
Driving, drinking alcohol and eating anything?
There are no restrictions for this drug.
Interaction
This medicine interacts with other medicines. The text below only lists the active substances of these medicines, not the brand names. You can check if your medicine contains any of these active ingredients in your package leaflet under the heading "composition".
The drugs with which the most important interactions occur are the following.
  • Ritonavir, a drug used in HIV infection, can increase the amount of mebendazole in the blood. This makes the side effects stronger. Consult your doctor if you have been prescribed this combination.
  • Metronidazole (an antibiotic). In combination with mebendazole, this drug increases the risk of a serious skin condition with blistering. You should preferably not use this combination together. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist about this.
Are you unsure if any of the above interactions are important to you? If so, contact your pharmacist or doctor.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before taking mebendazole. Especially during the first three months of pregnancy, mebendazole can be harmful to the unborn baby.

Use this drug only if your doctor has assessed that delaying treatment is more serious than the possible effects of treatment.

Breastfeeding
You can breastfeed safely if you use this drug in the normal dosage. It passes into breast milk in small amounts. It has been used by breastfeeding women for many years with no adverse effects on the child.

Stop
You are more certain of a good result if you repeat the treatment as recommended. If you do not, check the stool carefully for the presence of worms. This remedy does kill all the maggots and worms, but sometimes not all the eggs. Therefore, it is wise to treat again after two weeks because by then the remaining eggs will have hatched.
