Properties
X-Praep is a purified concentrate standardized for sennoside content, whose action is based on that of anthraquinone glucosides. X-Praep causes decomposition of colon and rectum on average 4 to 8 hours after administration. Its action is attributed to stimulation of Auerbach's plexus by translational products. The intestinal transit time of X-Praep containing barium is very constant in humans and animals and not dose-dependent. X-Praep is provided in chocolate-flavored liquid form, making ingestion easy and quick for the patient. The colon cleansing action of X-Praep is adequate: enemas, suppositories or a time-consuming colon run-in is no longer necessary on the day of the examination. X-ray images obtained with X- Praep lege artis show little or no interfering intestinal gas and are of good quality. Colon irritation does not occur.

Indications
Emptying of colon and rectum in preparation for the X-ray diagnostic examination of the gastrointestinal tract including cholecystographic examination and the double contrast method, as well as in preparation for urographic and scintigraphic examination, colon surgery, rectoscopy and cytological examination. Constipation, for example due to oral opiate medication.

Contraindications
Acute abdominal disease and obstructive bowel disease. Increased risk of gastrointestinal perforation. Advanced old age. Severe physical debilitation.

Side effects
Tolerance of X-Praep is generally good. Meteorism, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, collapses and (rarely) allergic or anaphylactic reactions may occur as side effect(s).
